To Professor Peter Doherty: I agree and unfortunately social sciences have been on university chopping blocks for far too long as I moved to Melbourne in the 1990's as my university was the only one that taught military strategies to civilians in the "Strategic Studies" major. And besides "Strategic Studies" I also studied two other social science majors in "Religion" (studying all religions but specialising in Islam) and "Art History" (studying art history from Palaeolithic to Postmodern but specialising in political art). And I only had to study one 8 point social science major and then do either a second 8 point social science major or fill it up with electives, but someone told me a way to be able to do my previously mentioned triple major social science degree. So I moved to Melbourne (after holidaying in Tasmania for 3 months when the Port Arthur Massacre happened and booking my ticket to leave the week before and then leaving the week after it happened) to study a social science degree here in Melbourne. So I began studying my triple major social science degree over 6 years working nights, often to 3am before my exams and writing some interesting essays (for example "What are the artistic and aesthetic dynamics of worshipping stones in religions?"). However I did have some extremely (especially currently) now relevant and important units in my social sciences degree, including an amazing social sciences unit, which at that stage was compulsory for my degree called "Health, Medicine And Society". I also managed to convince my university to add a whole new social sciences major that I titled "A Comparative Study In Religion, Art And Science. As obviously religious experiences and metaphysics cannot be scientifically empirically tested...yet. However half way through my six year social science degree in 2001 my university axed all my majors as being "economically irrelevant" including in "Health" and my Religious Studies Professor stated religion lasted less than 20 years at University. So half-way through my 6 year social sciences degree they axed everything (even "Art History" at the time) and my "Strategic Studies" major was axed as a newspaper found out Julian Knight was studying its military strategies for free from prison. And although there were social science alternatives offered they were not, as you have emphasised, socially critical. As now we can easily state that the "Health, Medicine And Society" unit should be a whole major or a whole social science degree. Thank-You From Adam Shane Lawes.
